Samford football player surprises stepdad with name change

Grab a tissue.

George Grimwade, a football player at Samford University, legally changed his name to George Grimwade Musto in honor of his stepfather, Michael Musto, who raised him since second grade.

“It sounds weird calling him my stepdad because he’s always been my dad to me,” George Musto said in a video produced and shared by the university.

In the video, he tells his stepfather how much he loves him before revealing his new name and football jersey that displayed the name “Musto.”

Michael Musto was overcome with emotion by the gesture.

The senior offensive lineman went to court in early September to make the name change official and received the paperwork at the beginning of October. He decided to wait until Samford’s Family Weekend to surprise his family.

The younger Musto couldn’t hide his smile when reading the court proclamation.

“I feel like I owe it to him to carry on his last name when I hopefully have kids,” he said. “I just want his legacy to live on forever. I don’t want it to end with him.”

It appears there wasn’t a dry eye on the internet watching this moment unfold:

Musto and his stepfather shared another hug and “I love you” before No. 76 had to return to the field.

Samford lost to Furman 58-14, but the Musto family won.
