This was not supposed to be the pair of teams matching up in the 2019 NLCS.
But after the Cardinals upended the favored Braves, and the Nationals stunned the Dodgers, the National League is assured an underdog representative in the World Series.
On paper, at least, it is difficult to project whether St. Louis or Washington will be that team. The Cardinals have a better organizational track record of playoff success and a tough lineup, but the Nationals carry a better starting rotation and are buzzing after their dramatic NLDS Game 5 victory in Los Angeles to send them to this stage.
Stars to watch for Washington include the Big 3 pitching trio of Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin, as well as middle-of-the-lineup hitters Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto. Each of the team’s top three pitchers started and came out of the bullpen in the NLDS. Whether or not they tire against St. Louis could determine whether they reach the World Series.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, have a balanced pitching staff anchored by ace Jack Flaherty, who followed up an epic run at the end of the regular season with a pair of quality starts against the Braves in the NLDS. Offensively, St. Louis depends on Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna for much of its production, though it has been getting big hits from all over its lineup in recent weeks.
