XFL Draft 2019 date, player pool, pick order & more: A guide to how the XFL Draft will work

The XFL plans to begin its revival in early 2020, but first it needs some players.

The new football league will be holding its draft this week. The XFL Draft will last two days, and it isn’t like most drafts you see in sports. Instead of taking the best overall player available, teams will instead be selecting from specific groups of players. More on that below.

There will be about 1,000 players eligible to be selected in the draft. There are eight teams drafting to fill a 71-man roster, which comes out to 568 total players.

While there may be some names you don’t recognize, the player pool has former NFL talent and college football stars who weren’t quite able to make a name in the big league. There are also a number of notable AAF players who are left without a team following the league’s demise.

Below is everything you need to know for the 2019 XFL Draft.

When is the XFL Draft 2019?

  • Day 1: Tuesday, October 15 (time TBD)
  • Day 2: Wednesday, October 16 (time TBD)

The start time for the draft is so far unknown. While we know the draft will span across two days, the XFL hasn’t clarified what will take place on each day. Player selections will be announced on the XFL’s website and social media handles.

How does the XFL Draft work?

The XFL Draft will be much different than what you’re used to in a typical sports draft. And it’s important to note, one quarterback will be assigned to each team prior to the draft. So while teams can still draft a QB, they’ll each have that position filled already.

The XFL Draft will take place in five phases.

  1. Skill Players (QB, RB, WR, TE)
  2. Offensive Line (OT, OG, OC)
  3. Defensive Front Seven (DL, LB)
  4. Defensive Backfield (CB, NB, SS, FS)
  5. Open Draft (all remaining players after positional drafts, in addition to P/K/LS)

In phases 1-4, each team will choose 10 players for a total of 40. In Phase 5, teams will choose from the pool of remaining players to complete their roster. The league will use a “snake” draft format, which means the selection order reverses after every round.

Teams will be given 90 seconds to make a selection.

XFL Draft pool 2019

There are around 1,000 players eligible to be selected in the draft, according to the XFL. The league’s website has a database of all the available names.

Here are a few of the more notable players you might recognize from their college, NFL and AAF playing days.

Player Name Position College
Trent Richardson RB Alabama
Jacoby Ford WR Clemson
Zach Mettenberger QB LSU
Connor Cook QB Michigan State
Sterling Moore CB SMU
Ronald Ollie DT Nicholls State
Ryan Broyles WR Oklahoma
Lance Dunbar RB North Texas
Roberto Aguayo K FSU
Andre Williams RB Boston College
Matt Jones RB Florida
Tyree Jackson QB Buffalo
Sammie Coates WR Auburn

Is Johnny Manziel in the XFL Draft?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: The XFL has a database of every player available in the pool, and Manziel’s name is not listed. When the XFL first launched, Vince McMahon was asked specificially about Manziel and it seemed unlikely the quarterback would make it in the league.

“You want someone who does not have any criminality associated whatsoever with them,” McMahon said. “Even if you have a DUI you will not play in the XFL. So that will probably eliminate some of them. Not all of them. If Tim Tebow wants to play, he can very well play.”

In June, commissioner Oliver Luck was asked if Manziel would be available in the XFL Draft and was non-committal.

“If eight guys say, ‘we’d like that guy in the league,’ we’ll put him in the league. Or put him in the draft pool,” Luck said. “Whether teams draft him, that’s up to the individual head coaches.”

Since Manziel wasn’t one of the almost 1,000 players given a commissioner’s invitation, he won’t be eligible for the XFL Draft. But it’s worth noting Manziel has expressed a desire to play in the XFL, so it’s worth watching whether the league will warm up to bringing on the troubled quarterback.
